About This Path:

This path follows a historic route connecting Torbay and Flatrock, with attractions including dramatic cliff views, a side trail loop deep into a cove to view a thriving kittiwake colony, and a community road dating to the 1820s. The trail passes a stony beach at Torbay, Tappers Cove wharf and mural, Church Cove loop, and a rocky jut of land known as the Beamer. Alternative routes at Church Cove offer the gentler inland route, as well as the difficult coastal ascent or descent of 125 m, partially on exposed rock steps. Note, in slippery conditions it is advised to by-pass the Beamer, Church Cove Point, and Church Cove Loop. Exercise caution near high cliffs. There are services available in Torbay; however, there are limited facilities in Flatrock.

Path Advisory: Hikers who wish to access Father Troy's Trail in the Town of Flatrock must use the Wade's Lane entry point. The access point through Wharf Raod is temporarily closed by the Town as a result of a mid-December storm that damaged the wharf and boat launch faciliity, and left large stones over the road and across the old shoreline route that hikers were using to access Father Troy's Trail. The Town Council has placed barriers across Wharf Road and asks for your cooperation as a safety precaution. The Wade's Lane access is only 10-15 metres further along the main road and you can drive your vehicle to the end of Wade's Lane, where a large parking area is available for hikers. No path clearing or conditions updates take place during winter months. Map recommended. Trail-rated footwear required.
Access Points:
  • Flatrock - Park at the end of Wades Lane, near the beach.
  • Torbay - Park at the end of Spray Lane.

Community Walk Getting to Silver Mine Head Path: After exiting the trail from the Torbay trailhead, walk 150 m, up Spray Lane, turn left for 330 m along Marine Drive, then bear left onto Motion Lane for 300 m, then right onto Motion Drive for 500 m, to the Silver Mine Head Path trailhead (total: 1.3 km).
