About This Path:

This path makes a great family excursion, offering gentle hiking, island views, and beach access at Deep Cove and Ferryland. The path features a woods walk with several access points, a farm meadow crossing, and a section of elevated old railway track with views. Views of Lance Cove and Ferryland Islands can be seen from the trail. Take the side path up the Gaze for panoramic views of Ferryland Harbour, downs, and the Ferryland Lighthouse. The walk can easily be combined with a visit to the Colony of Avalon, or a picnic on Ferryland Head. Limited facilities available in Calvert. Facilities and services available in Ferryland.

Path Advisory: No path clearing or conditions updates take place during winter months. Map recommended. Trail-rated footwear required. Trail structures & the trail bed along Caplin Bay Path requires repair. Hikers will encounter greater than normal areas of wet and muddy trail and deteriorated trail structures. An assessment of these paths is ongoing, and work will be scheduled based on funding availability. Please use extra caution when hiking.
Access Points:
  • Calvert - Immediately past Deep Cove Riber, turn left off Route 10 and park in the designated roadside area.
  • Lance Cove - Turn left off Route 10 and park in the turnaround above the cove.
  • Ferryland - Park at the Colony of Avalon Interpretation Centre. Cross Route 10 to the cemetery and Goose Well Lane.

Community Walk Getting to Sounding Hills Path: After exiting the trail from the Ferryland trailhead, from the junction of Pool Road and Route 10, proceed down Pool Road, past the Colony of Avalon Interpretation Centre, to the Pool and Backside Beach. Turn right, and follow the beach track until it joins Freshwater Road. Turn left and follow the road to the Sounding Hills Path trailhead (total: 1.4 km). PLEASE NOTE: The Sounding Hills Path is currently closed at the Ferryland trailhead; however, it is still possible to hike the path from the Aquaforte trailhead as far as Herring Cove and return to Aquaforte rather than proceed to Ferryland.
