East Coast Trail – centerpiece of course at Memorial University
Tuesday, January 7, 2014
As part of a teaching program investigating the richness and diversity of learning through authentic experience, a course at Memorial University will be taking intern teachers on a three-day hike of the East Coast Trail. Teacher interns will explore history, and culture as well as the scientific and social environment of the east coast of Newfoundland. In addition to hiking the trail each evening will be spent around a campfire with local experts sharing their perspective on the local folklore and music, aboriginal understandings, ecological awareness and the social and economic history of the east coast and the trail. Representatives of the ECTA have met with the course designers/instructors to help them map out a route for the hike and the various considerations when planning a three-day excursion. Students will prepare for the hike over the winter with some physical conditioning. The hike will take place in late April.
