Hiker Advisory: Upcoming Detour
Bridge on Spout Path Detour Beginning Monday, September 16
Upcoming Detour: Beginning Monday, September 16, our Trail Crew will commence work on replacing the bridge over Freshwater River on Spout Path. This project is expected to last approximately three weeks, during which the bridge will be closed. Hikers can use the stones in the river to cross and continue their journey. Given the typically low water levels this time of year, we expect most hikers will find the crossing manageable, but we advise extra caution, particularly after any rainfall.
Maintenance is a Continuous Effort: As mentioned in our press release earlier this year, maintenance of the East Coast Trail is a continuous effort; however, our current resources are stretched thin. As we celebrate 30 years of preserving and enhancing the Trail, it’s important to note that many of the original structures are nearing the end of their lifespan due to age, increased usage, and severe weather conditions. While the majority of the Trail remains in great condition, certain sections, like the upcoming detour, need immediate attention to ensure the quality you have come to expect.
Why This Matters: Our funding challenges limit us to focusing on high-priority and emergency maintenance. With the support of our community—through monthly donations, annual memberships, and corporate sponsorships—we can meet the increasing demands on our resources. Every contribution helps ensure that our trail system continues to thrive for future generations.
Key Detour Details:
- Bridge Closure Dates: September 16 to approximately October 7
- Affected Path: Spout Path, ~4.5 km from Bay Bulls
- Potential Weather Delays: The completion date may shift depending on weather conditions. Check our Path Advisories page for real-time updates.
How You Can Help: Our community is essential to maintaining the beauty and access to the East Coast Trail. By spreading the word, donating, or becoming a sponsor, you play a vital role in keeping the Trail accessible to all. With your support, we can move beyond high-priority fixes and ensure the Trail remains a world-class destination.
