Hikers raise $60,000 for the East Coast Trail

Over 350 hikers turned out to the 15th annual East Coast Trail Tely Hike
fundraiser and to celebrate International Trail’s day.

Individual hikers and teams raised more than $59,830, surpassing the goal of $50,000, and pledges are still coming in.

Hikers and representatives of the East Coast Trail Association, were joined by Minister Keith Hutchings, representing the Province, Senator Dave Wells representing ACOA, Shelley Beer representing corporate sponsor Exxon Mobil and special guests Andy Jones and Mary Lynn Bernard.

Prizes were awarded for the top three fundraising teams who raised a combined total of close to $13,000 and top three individual fundraisers who raised a combined total of over $7,500. Five door prizes were also awarded (see list of winners below).

The East Coast Trail is an award-winning hiking trail. More than 265 kilometres of wilderness coastal hiking trail have been developed over the past 20 years. The Trail is now recognized by National Geographic as one of the 10 best adventure destinations in the world

The East Coast Trail Tely Hike Fundraiser is an annual event that raises necessary funds to help maintain and protect the East Coast Trail.

2015 Fundraising Awards and Grand Prize Winners

Raising money is hard work, but some teams and individuals make it look easy. Thanks to all hikers who donated or spent their valuable time gathering pledges to support the East Coast Trail. Award winners for 2014 are:

FIRST PLACE TEAM
TETC (Torbay Environment & Trails Committee) Coyotes – $6020 – *Stan Cook Sea Kayak Adventures plus Ferryland Lighthouse lunch** (*up to 10). Dip your paddle into the calm waters of Cape Broyle’s rugged coast and point your kayak straight for the adventure of a lifetime with Newfoundland’s original award-winning adventure company. When you are done cruising alongside titanic icebergs and gentle humpback whales venture over to historic Ferryland Lighthouse (build in 1870) for a distinctive Lighthouse Picnic (for 10) using only the freshest ingredients.

SECOND PLACE TEAM
The Rice Krispies Gang 2015 – $3477 – *Brunch at renowned Mallard Cottage *(for up to 10), located in the quaint Quidi Vidi Village followed by a guided tour with nature advocate, author and professional speaker TA Loeffler.

THIRD PLACE TEAM
Fill Your Boots’s – $3187 – *Family passes to The Rooms,* where it all comes together, our history, heritage, and artistic expression then head over to Petty Harbour for a hearty meal of fish & chips at Chafe’s Landing (for 10)

FIRST PLACE INDIVIDUAL
Dianne Gartley – $3110.00 – A Zipline adventure for four followed by a fine meal. Located in Petty Harbour, North Atlantic Ziplines offers unparalleled adventure as you soar along rugged coastline and view a picturesque fishing village in a way you’ve never seen before. To top off the day enjoy a classic meal of two piece fish n chips at the Riverside Restaurant. (For four)

SECOND PLACE INDIVIDUAL
Robbie Hicks – $2,790.00 – A weekend get-away for two plus dinner for two at Riverside Restaurant, Cape Broyle. Take a trip “up the shore” to a lovingly restored saltbox vacation home “Mary Boland House” located in Calvert. An ideal base for a day-trip to the Ferryland Lighthouse or Mistaken Point or just spend the day relaxing on the deck. Snorkeling with whales with Ocean Quest Adventures plus dinner at Basho Restaurant ( for 2 people)

THIRD PLACE INDIVIDUAL
Evan Simpson- $1,410.00 –  Enjoy a family pass for O’Brien’s Whale & Bird Tours and a $25 gift certificate for the Sailor’s Gallery Restaurant. Take your family on an adventure of whale watching, birds and icebergs.

DOOR PRIZE WINNERS!

Everyone who donated or pledged $50 was entered into the Door Prize draws.
The more raised the more tickets were entered into the draw. And the winners were:
