About the East Coast Trail Association

The East Coast Trail Association (ECTA) is a registered charity responsible for the management, maintenance, enhancement, development, and protection of the East Coast Trail — a 336 km coastal wilderness hiking trail on the eastern edge of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula, recognized
by National Geographic as the world’s #1 coastline.

ECTA’s mission is to provide a world-class wilderness hiking experience by developing and maintaining the Trail, promoting public access, minimizing environmental impact, and protecting it for future generations. The Association is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and ten
standing committees, supported by an extensive network of volunteers, members, donors, and community partners across 24 Trail Towns.

The Opportunity

Are you a creative communicator who loves connecting people to causes that matter? Do you thrive on social media, enjoy writing, and get energized by community events? This role might be for you.

The Communications & Engagement Coordinator is the outward-facing voice of ECTA — the person who keeps our members, volunteers, and community connected to the Trail and to each other. You will manage ECTA’s social media presence, produce newsletters and website content,
coordinate volunteer and member engagement, and support the delivery of ECTA’s signature annual events.

You will report to and work closely with the Operations & Engagement Manager and engage directly with ECTA’s Marketing & Communications, Fundraising & Revenue, and Volunteers & Membership Committees. This is a meaningful opportunity to shape ECTA’s outward-facing voice — with real responsibility from day one, room to grow, and the support of an experienced manager at one of Atlantic Canada’s most recognized outdoor organizations.

Key Responsibility Areas

Social Media & Digital Communications

  • Day-to-day management of all ECTA social media platforms — content creation, scheduling, posting, and audience engagement
  • Monitor performance metrics and trends, reporting to the Marketing & Communications Committee
  • Support the execution of ECTA’s communications strategy across all digital channels

Website & Newsletter

  • Assist with content updates, maintenance, and improvements to ECTA’s website

  • Maintain editorial calendars, distribution lists, and publication schedules

Marketing Materials & Brand

  • Develop marketing and promotional materials for programs, events, and campaigns
  • Support brand consistency and visual identity across all ECTA communications
  • Support Trail Shop activities — including promotion, customer inquiries, walk-in and phone sales support, and product-related communications

Volunteer & Member Engagement

  • Support volunteer recruitment, onboarding, coordination, and retention in collaboration with the Volunteers & Membership Committee
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records using ECTA’s volunteer management system
  • Manage member communications including welcome messages, renewal reminders, and engagement updates
  • Support the membership management platform and assist members with inquiries

Events & Programs

  • Support coordination and scheduling of the annual Guided Hike Program
  • Assist with Awards Night logistics, invitations, and event materials
  • Provide on-site support at ECTA events including the Trail Raiser Community Hike

Community Outreach & Customer Service

  • Serve as a frontline contact for ECTA — handle in-person, phone, and social media customer service inquiries with warmth and professionalism
  • Represent ECTA at community events, partner activities, and outreach opportunities to build awareness and connection
  • Support ECTA’s presence with local communities, hike clubs, schools, partner organizations

Fundraising Communications Support

  • Plan and execute communications around ECTA’s fundraising campaigns — 50/50 draws, raffles, silent auctions, and peer-to-peer fundraising
  • Develop graphics, email content, and social media campaigns to promote fundraising activities
  • Coordinate with the Operations & Engagement Manager and relevant committees on fundraising campaign messaging and timing
