A recent wildfire in the Fermeuse/Kingmans Cove area burned approximately 350 metres on both sides of the path. It could have been worse. The East Coast Trail is at an extreme risk for fire loss.
The 2025 forest fire season has started earlier than usual due to current dry conditions, with approximately 40+ wildfires already reported. The lack of snowmelt this past winter has contributed to this condition.
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY THERE IS A ZERO TOLERANCE FIRE POLICY IN EFFECT FOR THE EAST COAST TRAIL:
- NO open fires of any kind permitted on the trail
- This includes campfires and burning materials of any kind
- Violations endanger lives, habitat, and trail infrastructure
FOR ALL HIKERS:
- Use gas camp stoves, or pack only no-cook food options
- Report smoke/fire immediately: 1-866-709-FIRE (3473)
- Know your exact location on the trail for emergency reporting
CURRENT CONDITIONS:
- Trail sections are exceptionally dry and vulnerable
- A single spark can rapidly become an uncontrollable wildfire
The East Coast Trails future depends on your vigilance. The only safe flame is no flame.
