Spirits of the Official Opening NOT Dampened

Saturday, October 17, 2009

High winds and driving rains did not dampen the spirits of the Official Opening of the Stiles Cove Path (Flatrock to Pouch Cove) on Saturday at the the Flatrock Community Hall. The Flatrock Ladies Auxiliary were out in full force with a wide assortment of baked goods and hot drinks and the Martin Family provided the lively music and atmosphere which set the tone for a good time.

Remarks were made by the Minister of Tourism, Clyde Jackman, Director General ACOA (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) Rick Comerford , MP St. John’s East Jack Harris, MHA Kevin Parsons, Mayor Kevin Butt of Flatrock as well as representatives from our supporters Exxon Mobil, 56th Army Squadron, SNC Lavalin. And Randy Murphy, president of the ECTA welcomed the distinguished guests and cheered the local supporters.

The hikes for that day were canceled due to weather but everyone present celebrated the occasion, all the same.

The Grand Opening hike was held on Sunday, the day following the Flatrock event.

The Stiles Cove Path (Torbay to Pouch Cove) map is available ($5) at the ECTA office, 738-4453 and at The Outfitters on Water Street, in down town St. John’s.

Due to weather and a delay in materials, the bridge at Shoe Cove is not completed but hopefully will be completed by late November.
