The Association is committed to the preservation and protection of our coastline for the current and future generations. It is a critical and core part of our mandate. We have been actively engaged in the Ragged Beach discussion since the spring of 2011, eight years ago, and we are very much aware of the issues and the story as it unfolded.

Ragged Beach is a special place that is fundamental to the Town of Witless Bay’s appeal as a tourism destination and recreational space for its residents. The Ragged Beach debate over the past eight years has clearly outlined the historic, recreational, tourism and ecological value of this section of coastline and its critical importance to the town’s residents and to the East Coast Trail.

We were not consulted or informed that the Witless Bay Town Council had hired a contractor to address what has been reported as an erosion problem at Ragged Beach. We were notified by a concerned resident mid-morning on Wednesday, July 31st, as the excavator was working its way across the beach. We are in the process of assessing the situation and the impact on the Trail, and once we have reviewed the action taken we will decide on next steps from an informed base.
