As we continue our commitment to maintaining and enhancing the East Coast Trail, here’s an overview of the work completed since our crews started in May 2024, as well as planned activities for July and August. This summary provides a detailed look at our efforts and progress, demonstrating our dedication to providing a safe and enjoyable trail experience.

May 2024

In May, our focus was on critical safety upgrades and preparations for the upcoming Trail Raiser event:

  • Beaches Path: We replaced and removed damaged boardwalk sections to ensure safety and improve trail quality. This involved significant boardwalk upgrades, addressing deteriorated sections to enhance the trail experience.
  • Mickeleens Path: A new bridge was installed, replacing an old, worn-out structure to improve accessibility and safety for hikers.
  • Trail Clearing: Fallen trees on both Beaches and Mickeleens Paths were cleared to ensure the trails were ready for the June 1st Trail Raiser event. This essential work helped provide a clear and safe route for participants.

June 2024

June was dedicated to thorough assessments and addressing major obstructions across the trail system:

  • Trail Assessments: Comprehensive assessments of all paths were conducted to identify fallen or leaning trees. We discovered approximately 220 downed trees and over 500 leaning trees throughout the trail system.
  • Tree Removal: Our crew focused on removing only those trees that significantly blocked the paths. This selective clearing ensured that the trails remained accessible and safe while prioritizing the most urgent issues.

July 2024

July marked the beginning of extensive enhancement projects and regular maintenance:

  • Cobblers Path (Logy Bay): Starting in late June, we embarked on a major trail enhancement project. This involves replacing all damaged or deteriorated structures, including boardwalks, bridges, crib steps, retaining walls, and water bars. This project is set to continue through July and into August, ensuring long-term trail sustainability.

  • Longshore Path: Our seasonal maintenance program kicked off with the installation of new crib steps and boardwalk sections between Longmarsh Road and Beachy Cove Hill. These upgrades will improve accessibility and trail stability.
  • Sugarloaf Path: Following the Longshore Path upgrades, we will repair the access structure to John Howard’s Bridge. This crucial work will enhance the bridge’s stability and safety for hikers.

Planned Work for August 2024

Looking ahead to August, our focus will shift to vegetation management and further trail repairs:

  • Motion and Spout Paths: We will undertake extensive vegetation management, including pruning and brushing, to keep the paths clear and navigable. Additionally, any damaged trail structures will be repaired, ensuring these popular paths remain safe and enjoyable for all hikers.

Our ongoing trail work demonstrates our unwavering commitment to maintaining and enhancing the East Coast Trail. We are dedicated to providing a world-class hiking experience, and these efforts are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our trail crews. Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for the East Coast Trail.
